Heck, I had so many reasons to get a kick out of Cactus Jack & Funk vs. The
Quebecers that they could have done anything in the ring and I'd have enjoyed
it. The only thing bad I can say about this match was that Jacques and Pierre
didn't get to enter to their awe-inspiring "We're not the Mounties!" song. Ok,
so Funk was a total joke in this match, almost as bad as Bunkhouse Buck, but
I'm in the fan club so HE CAN DO NO WRONG. I actually thought for a second that
he might try an Asai moonsault when he was bouncing on the outside second ring
rope. Hey Jacques! Lay off the Laurentide!
The NWA angle has me flip-flopping between "it's ok" and "it's a really bad
idea". This week was ok and I felt the tug of nostalgia to see Barry Windham
reunited with the (half-assed) NWA. Bradshaw was in full-on Stan Hansen mode,
right down to the dickish kick to the back. I still think Jarrett is a good
wrestler who just doesn't feel like showing it to anybody. Actually, for a
short match it was pretty damn competent. The R'n'R Express weren't so bad this
week either.
The Shawn Michaels as Undertaker angle was pretty damn cool even if all the
fake Undertaker stuff is becoming as stale as the lousy fake Sting stuff in WCW
(which was pretty stale to begin with). The cookout was a good idea but why
didn't they light up? Ever notice how much HHH looks like Howard Stern,
especially when he wears his sunglasses on the bridge of his nose?
The TAKA/Owen/Headbangers vs. Boriquas match was ok because TAKA done good and
Savio hit the best corner kick EVER but the placing of Owen Hart in it was ALL
wrong. They put him in a classic WWF we-gotta-get-these-guys-on-TV meaningless
tag team match, thus suggesting that he is somewhat at that level which is
exactly not the thing to do with someone who's supposed to be HEADLINING against
Shawn Michaels in the near future. Ah, what do I really care though? The match
was good enough.
Steve Austin gave the single best performance of his non-wrestling career Monday
night. Given Tyson's notorious pattern of behaviour I was marking out that
Austin put himself right in Tyson's face, baiting him and the crowd with a
perfectly delivered speech. And McMahon was beautiful in his role too, breaking
down at the end and acting like a spoiled kid who's party had just been ruined
by throwing spiteful kicks at Austin. If it turns out to be true that a match
at Wrestlemania is gonna happen then count me in as one unlikely person to be
hooked by the Tyson angle. It's too bad Iron Mike had to tarnish things by
calling Austin a faggot just as the show went off the air. Not that wrestling's
a politically correct venue to begin with but there are some people of high
ethical character, including *cough* yours truly, for whom this type of talk
is completely unnecessary. There are countless ways to insult an individual without
insulting others.
The Tyson meets the superstars vignettes were all pretty funny. I dug Tyson with
NOD the most, then Jack & Funk and DX. And Tyson went on record saying that
Bob Backlund was the man! AND he put over Nikolai Volkoff!
Tom Brandi just isn't catching on that pro-wrestling at a major level has
changed and his ridiculous 1980s crowd gesticulating will not get him heat.
Chapter 23 of an ok feud because Sable gets heat but an otherwise unremarkable
series of matches. Be sure to look for a winner gets Sable match at Rasslemania.
Rocky Maivia and Ahmed Johnson had a match and Ahmed didn't get injured! It
worked!
So I guess Billy Gunn wants to wrestle in tights now. And Road Dog grew a lot
of hair extensions over the past two weeks. And the Godwinns should STILL go
back to being Tex Slazenger and Shanghai Pierce!
