What Worked
The Vince McMahon and Steve Austin soap opera continued this week and it was pretty good, even if the idea that Austin would suit up in the first place is a little out of character. But I still dug it, especially Steve taking a snapshot of McMahon, and Vince selling the crotch shot all the way to the back. But it's also a bad sign that the top heel in the promotion is the owner, and not a legit challenger to the belt.

Dan Severn vs. Flash Funk was way better than I expected it to be, good enough in fact that I won't complain about Funk jobbing AGAIN. If they drop the NWA deal and just focus on Cornette managing Severn, things could heat up.

The DX Army interview was pretty decent. I still don't like Bad Ass and Road Dog as members but they are at least the best choice out of a thin talent roster. It's a good idea to push Helmsley hard in Shawn's absence since it creates immediate tension upon his return, and even if they don't split right away it plants the seed for a big feud down the road. The pissing on DOA's bikes angle was ok, I couldn't see any liquid (hey, if you're gonna do an angle, make it as real as possible), but I did like the line about drinking so much water to look so good.

Cactus Jack's interview was the highlight of the night and probably his best ever in the WWF. Mick Foley is just so good at this sort of thing. Not that he will, but this would have been the coolest retirement speech in history.

The promo for Val Venis (TSN didn't air the first one on the broadcast I caught last week) was ok, obviously cashing in on the Boogie Nights vibe, but Sean Morley didn't do anything to make himself stand out. Still, it was a nice flashback to the time when every WWF newcomer was featured in vignettes week after week.

Marc Mero Sucks vs. Ken Shamrock was pretty good because Shammy showed off some new offense that really looked cool. At this point I'm into the idea of a Severn vs. Shamrock "rematch" sometime in the future. I didn't take good notes and I honestly don't remember what else happened in this match.

What Didn't Work
Brian Christopher vs. Steve Blackman wasn't so bad but I just didn't care about this match at all. The angle at the end was ok, nice guitar shot and all, but who really is gonna get excited about a Blackman/Jarrett feud?

Owen Hart vs. Rocky Maivia was ok because of Owen, and the Rock is ok but again, I just didn't care about the match. The finish made me care even less. Maivia really should tone down his facials.

Luna vs. a jobber would have been cool if Goldust hadn't softened him up first. I mean, the whole point is to show just what a bad ass she is. Luna didn't need any help in ECW laying a beating on Stevie Richards so why did she against a jobber? Poor booking.

The Undertaker interview and Kane/Paul Bearer on location was the usual crap. I know that some people like this stuff, but I don't.

DOA vs. DX was pretty lame, especially for a TV main event. X-Pac on commentary was really bad, which knocks him down a rung, IMO, from the great debut he made the week before. I'm looking forward to seeing him in the ring though, and even if it's politically impossible, a series of matches between him and TAKA would kick my ass.
