Hobbit 3 is well ahead of Hobbit 1 & 2 in terms of pace, but neither of those movies had hit Christmas at this point. Mojo is thinking it will top Hobbit 2, but not get to $300M.

Hunger Games is making a run at Cap for the top movie of the year. It's $26M down, and pulled in $13M from Thu-Sun on the Christmas weekend. If it can knock $16M off that on Mon-Sun, then it has a chance of getting hat last $10M.

Check that: Mockingjay 1 has already passed Cap2 and is now chasing Guardians for the top spot. Still $30M behind Guardians.

You're right: I meant GotG when saying Cap. :)

Hunger Games 3.1 is up to $319M. It moved from being just $10M ahead of GotG's pace to now $20M thanks to the holidays. Depends on how quickly if falls off starting Monday when the holidays are over, but it's now under $14M behind GotG's overall take, and will finish the weekend comfortably under $10M while well over $20M ahead of the pace. I'm thinking it's going to end up #1 for the year unless it hits a rapid wall.

A number of the Christmas movies are going to hit $100M, but none of them look like blockbusters. Into The Woods is a bit behind Les Mis' pace, though will be close by the end of the weekend. Les Mis ended up just under $150M... that's not unreasonable for Into The Woods.

Kind of a messy year at the box office.

I suspect Mockingjay 1 benefited, in part, because of a weak crop of Christmas movies this year. The Hobbit films certainly suffered from burnout and not living up to expectations, and nothing else that came out really stood out from the pack.

It's possible some people weren't entirely sold on the first part being one to go see in the films at first, but had second thoughts.

I would think Mockingjay 2 will do much better with its opening, and I'd be surprised if it didn't match the first two, given that it's the finale.

As for the summer, several franchises either had burnout or audiences who may have been skeptical about them, and in the latter, word of mouth wasn't strong enough, with Guardians being the exception.

HG passed Guardians last week to take the crown.

Hobbit is about $9.5M behind Cap for #3. Coming off a $2.8M weekend. Still in 1400+ theaters. But less than $1M ahead of Hobbit 2's pace, and losing the daily battle with it. Hobbit 2 only got to $258. So it might not get to #3.

Domestic: $337,209,000 (67.4%)
Foreign: $163,000,000 (32.6%)

I don't think it's launched in China yet. It pulled in $14.6M this past weekend overseas, and has pulled in about $55M or so in the past two weeks (including weekdays).

It looks like it has some markets to still open in, but I'm not sure of there's enough to make the Foreign reach the level it has Domestically.

My guess is that this is similar to the first Captain America: the "America" is a bit of a negative oversea. Cap eventually overcame it in Cap 2, but more likely Avengers helped get him over.

In the case of American Sniper, this is a war where most of the rest of the world thinks we were total asshole, and the movie to a degree glorifies it while ignoring any of the American Assholes factors.
