Ball still can't shoot, but the assists and boards were nice. Losing to the Celtics sucked.

This seems to be a way to make sure they're in the Lebron sweepstakes next year.

LeBron moves his pawn.

Lakers finally playing chess instead of checkers. Or Uno.

Also Uncle John, I used your "on several levels" quote exquisitely in a convo yesterday. I had to mention it.

Lonzo!

36-11-8-5-2 !!!

Before last night, no player in RealGM's summer league database (since 2004) had a 30-10 assist game.

That's a lot of players.

The great ones rise to the moment. LeBron showed up and Lonzo SHOWED up.

Pretty good 24 hours for the Lakers. Man, the touch and precision on Lonzo's passes is so sweet.

That was an impressive performance.

One gets the sense that they went after KCP when the realized that they needed to break Ball in gently defensively. There are far too many guards that will school the shit out of him. KCP will take the toughest assignments. Smart.

*If* they get Bron and PG next season, you can bet they'll look around the FA market for some cheap 3&D guard to play off Ball. Not saying that Ball will always be a poor defender through his career, but he's also 20 and never has played a bit of quality defense in his life. It's going to take him a while to pick up his game on that side. So if we're a smart organization, we make sure to protect him. 3&D off guard, Bron & PG is a pretty good foundation to the defensive side of the ball. They likely will look for a 5 who can rim protect & switch on defense, while pick & roll on offense. Then a stretchy guy as a back up.

That's the biggest issue next year - filling out the roster around Bron and PG if Bron comes. We know Bron doesn't want to waste even a year in not contending, so there's going to be a lot of pressure to put the piece around him.

Perhaps people might be seeing an issue here:

Bron = Forward
PG = Forward

Neither of those guys play 5. Bron really doesn't even like to play 4 full time because of the pounding, and frankly because he also like to abuse 3's physically.

Ingram is a Forward.

You do not bring in Bron and PG and not start them. And obviously they are better than Ingram, and will be next year as well.

I don't think Ingram is ready to play the #2 spot off Ball. Maybe that's his long term freaky role as a 6-9 SG, which would avoid him getting abused physically by forwards. But...

There's no way he's ready for that next year. He also sure as heck isn't going to be ready to defend the best guard *every night* against *every team* so Ball can be hidden on someone else.

Ingram might be the 6th man next year if everyone's fantasy comes true.

Or...

Trade bait.

I don't care for the second one. I wouldn't mind him as the 6th man as he presents a lot of options off the bench, and would be learning under two really good players.

Lakers win the Summer League title, and Lonzo gets the MVP.

I wouldnt be surprised now if the Lakers gets a few high-profile nationally televised games. Moreso than last year at least.

I already know Lonzo is gonna be a gamechanging stud.

But could Kuzma be a real player as well?

I hope that's even a debate in 5 yeas, because we should be having it in the Finals.

Lonzo is a force multiplier, can't wait to see what he does with Randle or even Nance.

Kuzma looked too good not to play, so Zubac could be out of the rotation. Here is the way too early look at it:

Brook Lopez/Randle/Nance/Zubac
Randle/Nance/Kuzma
Ingram/Deng/Brewer
KCP/Clarkson
Lonzo/Vet PG/Hart

PG is likely to come. If KD wasn't going to stay in OKC when he actually loved the community, then PG isn't going to stay when he loved Los Angeles.

Lebron is always a crap shoot. He does appear likely to be leaving Cleveland if things continue to break down there. Then it's a question of where he goes, and what he wants. We're not going to be able to put together a team next summer that threatens the Warriors. But there aren't many, if any, places he could go where he could challenge the Warriors. So... it will be an interesting 2018 summer.
