Episode two of "Life on Mars" aired last night on BBC America.

DCI Hunt wanted to plant evidence on someone he knew came into Manchester to commit robbery, but Sam refused to let him do it. The criminal and his two accomplices committed the robbery and tried to shoot Sam and Hunt, but shot the police station cleaning lady and put her in a coma. Hunt blamed Sam. Sam, fed up with everything and still convinced that the 1973 scene was a delusion caused by his own coma, walked into a bar and yelled for a different year. "I'll have 1988 please, quick as you like!"

One of the interesting aspects of the show is how they rebuild the handgun as a huge weapon. The three robbers only have one handgun. The other two use whatever plunder is handy, from a knotted rope to a board with nails in it to a heavy chain. The police aren't armed at all. They have to rely on tackling and punching to subdue their opponents. That's just one aspect of a show that documents how remarkably the world has changed over the past 30 years.

Episode two replays Sunday night on BBC America.

Several items pertaining to "Life on Mars":

1) BBC America will be reshowing the first few episodes on August 20th in a mini-marathon, but...

2) BBC America has been chopping down the original episodes to stuff them into a one hour timeslot. This may account for the frenetic pacing of some of the episodes which have seemed "overtightened" in spots.

3) David E. Kelley is working on an Americanized version of "Life on Mars." I can't recall an Americanized version of a BBC show that has been better than the original since "Three's Company" thirty years ago.

The Office remake is actually better than the BBC version. Steve Carell and the other actors have done a great job in the remake. Plus I like the increased use of the supporting characters in the American version.
