WWE Films latest feature, "The Condemned" featuring "Stone Cold" Steve Austin, opens this weekend. Early reviews have not been auspicatory.

Frank

"'The Condemned,' directed by Scott Wiper (appropriate last name), is a bad rip-off of the 2000 Japanese sensation 'Battle Royale' and the 1932 U.S. classic 'The Most Dangerous Game.'"
- V.A. Musetto, New York Post

"A zillionaire collects 10 hard cases from death rows around the world (how about that, even 'Running Man' rip-offs are being outsourced), throws them together on an island, and tells them to start a-killin' because the sole survivor will be freed. And it's a live-as-it-happens, pay-per-view Web cast."
- Michael Ordoņa, L.A. Times

"'The Condemned' attempts to redeem itself with some late-inning moralizing that only cheapens the proceedings; if you're going to brandish as many guns as 'The Condemned' does, at least stick to 'em in the end."
- Adam Graham, Detroit News

"It has the audacity to serve as a self-righteous indictment of graphic, gratuitous violence, even though that's exactly what it's peddling."
- Christy Lemire, Canadian Press

"There is little acting required, but chrome-dome Austin extends himself grunting and snarling and looking pissed. Compared to him, Wesley Snipes is Laurence Olivier."
- V.A. Musetto, New York Post

"The result is no better than the kind of low-budget action potboilers that studios like Cannon used to churn out in the 1980s with he-men like Michael Dudikoff ('American Ninja'), Arnold Schwartzenegger ('Commando') and Dolph Lundgren. In several ways it’s even worse. Those guys at least had some personality to them."
- Dr. Frank Swietek, One Guy's Opinion

The best quote is the one that didn't appear above, via RottenTomatoes.com:

"If WWE overlord Vince McMahon can extract anything good from "The Condemned," it's that the XFL no longer is his greatest creative failure."
-- Nick Rogers, State Journal-Register (Springfield, IL)

Oh, and try this one as well.

"As off-putting and ridiculous as it is ponderous, this WWE Films enterprise should have been condemned to fight for space on the DVD shelves rather than be thrust upon unsuspecting moviegoers."
--Michael Rechtshaffen, Hollywood Reporter

Rotten Tomatoes has 67 reviews tallied, 58 rotten.

Box office estimates have the Condemmed at 8th place making 1.3 mil last night on pace for a 3.7 mil weekend. Way short of the 6 + mil it was expected to make.

Very disappointing if you ask me, since this was the "best" of the WWE FILMS according to WWE talent/staff. And next it will have no box office at all as Spiderman 3 kicks off the summer box office.

Yeah... Spidey will kill everyone. The only movie or movies to pull in any passable box office will be the #1 and #2 movies this week. They might gets some folks who don't want to fight the Spidey crowd. But even they will be down huge. Condemmed will be scraping to break $1M next week.

Ohh... But it can't be that much worse than No Holds Barred, can it?

And thus will begin the real start of the "summer blockbuster" era, what with Spidey 3 next week, Shrek 3 soon after, Pirates 3 Memorial Day weekend, and a couple more in July (Harry Potter and The Simpsons will likely be the two biggest).

And then there's always the movies that could emerge as the surprise hit, like the first Pirates was.

The Condemned opened in the $4M range. 9th on the week, 3rd among movies that opened this week. It was a light week fr new movies since Spidey-3 is next week.

Second week for The Condemned... well, we knew Spidey 3 would kill it, but it's even worse news than that. From Meltzer:

"The Condemned did $360,000 at the box office last night for 12th place. That figure is disastrous. Generally you expect a 50% drop from the prior week as a decent figure. Dropping less is good, more is bad. This was a 73% drop from last Friday. As bad as the figures were last week, this is far worse. At this pace it will probably do about $1 million and probably finish in a few weeks around $8 million. It would have to beat The Marine by a good 25% in the DVD market to end up as a break-even project, and based on its complete lack of legs, that's a long shot."

"Complete lack of legs" sounds more like JDW than Meltzer. ;)
