Very surprising move here. It would've been the top-grossing film this holiday season. Now it might actually have a chance at being the top-grossing film of next year. Next summer's movies dont look that appealing in terms of box office besides sequels to X-Men and Transformers, and the usual Pixar movie.

Plus it has the benefit of having nearly the exact release date as the Dark Knight which proved that mid-July films can be the top-grossing film of the year and be even more powerful than May-June releases. And also kids can watch the movie ad nauseam due to no school in July.

But in any event, this pretty much puts the belief that no other movie this year will hold a candle to the Dark Knight.

Strange move.

November Potters
$317,575,550 Potter-1
$290,013,036 Potter-4
$261,988,482 Potter-2

June/July Potters
$292,004,738 Potter-5
$249,541,069 Potter-3

Potter-5 "broke the trend", but it's a bit of an illusion. It came out on 7/11/07, just 10 days before the 07/21/07 release of the Final Book. There was monsterous Potter Hype going on, more than *ever* in the series. That resulted in just $2M more in box office from Potter-4. It did a bit more globally, but the global market was also in the middle of Pottermania.

These movies really have done better in November. They really had the field open to themselves as it was two weeks after the Bond/Madagascar war, and Devember looks light relatively speaking until 12/19 when Will Smith opens Seven Pounds. But even that's tricky - suicidal IRS agent?

This looked like a year where Potter would get back over $300M as there wasn't a real event between Batman and Potter other than Bond. And what people seem to forget is that the four Bonds are the biggest ones at the US box office ever:

$125,304,276 Tomorrow Never Dies
$126,943,684 The World Is Not Enough
$160,942,139 Die Another Day
$167,445,960 Casino Royale

It's not as massive as people think. It's only top a $40M opening weekend twice, and peaked at $47M for Die Another Day.

Madagascar was bigger: $193,595,521.

Don't know the thinking here. I actually suspect they're lowkeying production issues, either with this one or getting things together for the double shot of the Final. With this being pushed back, it looks like they're pushed those back as well into the 18 months cycle they've been trying to maintain.

Story I heard is that WB has f-all coming out next summer and needs the
Potter $$$ to beef up the bottom line. (Their only other summer film is
Terminator: Salvation. I'm guessing Akira isn't going to make it.)

Dark Knight is making enough bank to cover the void that moving P6
leaves in the 2007 totals.
