They had popular films in the 10: Up and Avatar. I don't think the number of nominations hurt Avatar. If anything, it's possible that if there were just 5 nominations with Avatar one of the 5 and Up *not* that Avatar would have won.

Of course we don't know how the voting broke down, and if Avatar and Up were 2-3 and remotely close to Hurt Locker.

I think I read somewhere that, instead of the usual first-past-the-post voting where Avatar and Up might have split the vote allowing Hurt Locker to sneak in, they used single-transferable-vote like they do when voting for the Olympic sites: throw out the worst candidate and resort their votes until somebody gets over 50%.

Of course, in a 5 nominee year Hurt Locker might not have even gotten nominated. Then Avatar wins in a lock.

It pretty much was a lock to get nominated.

Golden Globe Nominess:

Drama
Avatar
The Hurt Locker
Inglourious Basterds
Precious
Up in the Air

Musical or Comedy
The Hangover
(500) Days of Summer
It's Complicated
Julie & Julia
Nine

It won the DGA, and the DGA winner's movie *always* gets nominated (and the Director has only failed twice... and one was a strange bit of anti-Spielberg backlash).

Won the WGA.

It won a slew of Film Critics awards that are often good guide for the non-blockbusters getting run: Los Angeles Film Critics Association, National Society of Film Critics and New York Film Critics Circle Awards. Those aren't always locks to get nominated, but far more exceptions than rules. The NSFC is a little more bold in their picks, especially with foreign-language pictures winning. But winning it in addition to the others is a sign.

With 5 movies, Up would have been stuck in Animated. We don't really know (sadly) how close it was, and if those three were 1-2-3.
