Yeesh. Punk is 36 years old, he's been a pro wrestler for 15+ years, has no wrestling or martial arts background other than BJJ as a hobby...well, good luck. :)

He's going to fight guys with a low level of experience similar to his own.

It's still the UFC, and they don't typically match-make complete squash matches to build people up. Punk may get someone 1-0 or 1-1 who have years of BJJ or Wrestling competition, and end up screwed.
Better use of him might have been to be tosses into into the House on TUF. There's a risk of many of the fighters on the show wanting to fuck him up, but there also might be some that are fans. There's also the risk that he doesn't even get into the House and is eliminated in the fight-ins... so that is quite a risk. It does get him on TV, helping anchor the show along with the coaches at a time when the show isn't doing gangbusters ratings. |

He'll make it through training. He's a pretty driven guy, and always has been.
I also don't think he worries about going in there and losing or getting beat. I think 95%+ of this is because he loves MMA (he has for ages) and wants to push himself to do something. It's doing something he enjoys / admires, and whatever happens is fine by him.
Of course he's likely to lose. I don't think anyone is doubting that. UFC might give him a can of corn to start with, but even that isn't really their M.O. |

By "not their M.O.", I mean this is the same crew (Dana and Joe Silva) who booked Brock Lesner in with Frank Mir in Brock's first UFC fight. Which was basically an insane thing to do given Mir's level of experience. |
