Somewhere mixed in with all the tOA posts, I told how I got a bunch of VCR tapes from Koji in Japan. It's his stuff from 77 & 78 mostly. Koji got it from a fan & it's like 5 generation level. But very watchable. I think very few if any people in America has it. I only have one of the old style VCR players & I can't make copies. I filed them as The Destroyer tapes 1 to 8.

---PWF BATTLE ROYAL (1-2-82).

Tonight I was looking thru a pile of tapes & found another one. I didn't know what was on & didn't remember it. But it was from Koji, so I desided to file it.

It had two AJW TV shows. I think most of all of this came from a local show in Yokohama. But I don't know anything. It was like a 4th or 5th generation tape. The only bad thing about it was a buzz sound in the background. It started with a clip of The Destroyer putting the fig-4 on someone later I figure it was Mike Graham. The show was filmed on March 5. 1977 (I think).

Then it had Mil Mascaras wrestling a heavy set Japanese kid. I didn't see how I was going to figure out who it was. It didn't look like anyone I knew. The Destroyer was ringside & coaching the kid. Late in the match Dick yells something using the word "Takachino" and yelled "shit it's Kabuki"! This was a build up to a Mil/Destroyer match and Mascaras wrestles and throws the kid around using cool wrestling moves that looked real. Stuff I had never seen done before. Kabuki just hangs in there but does have much offense...until he gets rough ...and Mil kills him. It's very interesting. Mil is great. Fuck everyone who says he's not.

Later it has a Mil & Dick Slater match with Jumbo & Baba. Pretty good. Are you guys sure Jumbo is lazy.

It has a Mil/Destroyer US Title match on it from 3-11-77. It's not new stuff. I posted about years ago. But it is a long version with more shown of the post match draw with both guys almost getting unmasked. Seems they were building to a mask vs mask match that never happened. It was a semi-main to a Robinson/Jumbo match and it has a rushed feeling to it but I like it a lot.

The last 15 minutes is a skit from The Destroyer's TV show that was based on our "Laugh In". So the complete tape looks like this:

#1059-DESTROYER TAPE # 8
1-AJW TV SHOW (MARCH 5 (?), 1977)
--CLIP OF DESTROYER SUMITTING MIKE GRAHAM WITH FIG-4
--MIL MASCARAS VS AKIHISA TAKACHINO (KABUKI) (DESTROYER RINGSIDE)(3-5-77?)
--VIDEO OF MIL MASCARAS USING “FLYING CROSSBODY CHOP WITH DESTROYER
--CLIP OF FANS WATCHING RIKIDOZAN VS KING KONG FOR ALL-ASIAN TITLE
--SHOHEI BABA & JUMBO TSURUTA VS DICK SLATER & RON BASS 2/3 FALLS
--PHOTOS OF TENRYU GETTING SUMO HAIR CUT BY BABA
2-AJW TV SHOW (MARCH 1977)
--MIL MASCARAS & DICK SLATER VS JUMBO TSURUTA & TAKACHINO 2/3 FALLS
-CLIPS OF PINFALLS OF JUMBO TSURUTA VS BILLY ROBINSON (3-5-77 & 3-11-77)
--INTERVIEW OF BILLY ROBINSON TELLING TSURUTA TO COME TO MIAMI FOR UN TITLE REMATCH
(PWF US TITLE)
-THE DESTROYER VS MIL MASCARAS 2/3 FALLS (3-11-77)(LONG VERSION)
3-THE DESTROYER ON JAPANESE TV SHOW

It would be nice to put together a Destroyer Set similar to the Verne set. Would this be a good project to start working on?

The only concern that I have is that I don't know the Destroyer like I know Verne in terms of his career. If it was going to be a "best of" I would need a ton of guidance to put the right things in place. if it was more "all-encompassing", that would probably be easier because then all you need are the correct dates.

I don't know how much time an all-encompassing would take up.

Maybe it's a two step process:

A. Collect all of it

Get all of it to you to rip and tinker with. Figure out how many hours of stuff there ends up being.

B. Figure out the direction to go

If there is 30-40+ hours of stuff, a 15-20+ disc set maybe seems to much. I don't know... Will and you are better at knowing the threshold on what works.

If there's 20-30 hours pulling everything together, then a 10-15 disc set isn't extreme in the sense of being complete.

He does have a pair of one hour draws. There are some other long matches. It could get to be a long set fast. In which case time to make choice on what's makes the cut.

Looking at Dan's misc set, it looks like these are the only Destroyer matches/clips not listed by Steve earlier:

04/21/78 Tokyo: Destroyer vs. Gino Hernandez (1:38 shown)

04/27/78 Aomori: Giant Baba & Destroyer vs. Dick Murdoch & Kim Duk (4:45 shown)

01/03/79 Tokyo: Heavyweight Battle Royal

10/04/80 Broadcast Mascara Special Feature: Mascara brothers vs. Destroyer & Cruiser (digest) (no match date and don't know who Cruiser is since I haven't watched it yet)

The 4/27/78 match and all the loaded mask stuff by Destroyer makes more sense as it leads into the 05/06/78. If we ever get around to doing a big Destroyer Comp, one will want to add that as a lead in. It's short so it doesn't take up a lot of space, but gets across how they heated things up leading into the singles match.

Steve - have you gotten any other fresh Destroyer stuff since 2013?

3-THE DESTROYER ON JAPANESE TV SHOW

I have all of these VCR tapes bagged & ready to mail, because I promised Kawk I'll mail them to him so could put them on DVD & pass them out. So I bought bags, took them to the post office & waited in line for 45 minutes. Then the lady told me I'd need a phone # and postage to Canada was over $125. I'm on SS & living on $1,800 a month. I just couldn't do it, after all these years giving everything away for the good of pro wrestling. I just felt like "fuck pro wrestling". I can't afford it any more.

I never said anything to Hawk (and I'm sorry) but I always felt I might lighten up & mail it. Didn't happen.

I told this story to John a few months ago returning from the movies. He said give them to me. I said $125 & he said yeah. I told him to come pick them up. I think he said Ok....but I never hear any more about it. So they sit.

John doesn't watch wrestling anymore or like it & I find it hard because I'm in the process of writing pro wrestling history in graft form & I don't have time. I still have Japanese tapes from 2009 to 2013 sitting around. When I do watch I love it. But DVDs suck.

John tells me shit about tape sellers mailing a whole year of NJW for very little. I used to say no because I'm loyal to Jeff Lynch (8 hr VCR tape for $25), but I can't afford that anymore. If that person exists I'd like to talk to him. Steve Yohe (stevedyohe@aol.com)

I don't remember you mentioning it. We return from movies at 1am in the morning usually, which isn't a good time for me to remember anything. If you mention it earlier the next time, we'll swing by the ATM in the food court and I'll get some cash.

There's also a slightly cheaper way to ship stuff as "media". Lee and I used it for a box of books, dvd's and cd's shipped back from DC. The box weighed about 16 pounds and cost under $10.

I'll bring the packages the next time I come over & you can mail them. I've been doing it for 25 years & I'm sick of it. It will be good for you. Be sure to get Hawk's phone number, you'll need it.---Yohe

$125 to ship? That seems ridiculously high. Someone didn't know what they were talking about IMO.

I bought some tapes off of Verne Siebert last year (with some Destroyer Montreal clips on them, ironically), and even though it was Canada-to-Canada, 9 tapes shipped didn't cost more than 20 bucks.

How many physical tapes total are there? 8? The post office people didn't have a clue.

My number is available no problem if we ever get this organized, John can get it from me via PM at the PWO site or via email. You too Steve, if you ever want it for whatever reason.

So John called me tonight and all 4 of us are working on this Destroyer project. He says he's going to give a list of what you guys have & I'll add what I can. I'll also send the 77 & 78 stuff, and you can pick what you want off of it. John in tied up for three weeks, so nothing will happen until then.

The Crusher with Dick was Roger Kirby in a Destroyer mask.

Have you guys seen a lot of Mark Lewin?

Yohe:

Dan has found these four original TV shows:

09/02/82 at Tochigi Prefectural Gymnasium
Genichiro Tenryu & Atsushi Onita vs Destroyer & Ultraseven (30:00)
Terry Funk vs Crusher Blackwell (9:35)
Int’l Tag Title: Giant Baba & Jumbo Tsuruta vs Stan Hansen & Ron Bass (12:25)

09/08/82 at Yamagata Prefectural Gymnasium
Genichiro Tenryu vs Destroyer (12:10)
Jumbo Tsuruta vs Ron Bass (8:13)
All Asia Tag Title: Akio Sato & Takashi Ishikawa vs Frank Dusek & Rufus Jones (11:49)
Giant Baba & Terry Funk vs Stan Hansen & Crusher Blackwell (7:30)

09/11/82 at Tokyo Korakuen Hall
Atsushi Onita vs Ultraseven (7:09)
Destroyer & Ron Bass vs Giant Baba & Jumbo Tsuruta (11:03)
Terry Funk vs Stan Hansen (10:54)

09/14/82 at Kariya City Gymnasium
Atsushi Onita vs Frank Dusek (12:15)
Terry Funk & Jumbo Tsuruta & Genichiro Tenryu vs Destroyer & Ron Bass & Crusher Blackwell (13:29)
PWF Title: Giant Baba vs Stan Hansen (5:56)

The 9/14 match has been out there for a while due to Classics. But I think all the rest are new. The first two are likely JIP a ton. The 9/11 match might be pretty complete.

Dick had three singles against Graham on the series:

02/24 Ashikita, Japan The Destroyer beat Mike Graham
03/02 Kurikome, Japan The Destroyer beat Mike Graham
03/05 Akita, Japan The Destroyer beat Mike Graham

I think the card was this one:

http://www.cagematch.net/?id=1&nr=105050

* The Destroyer defeats Mike Graham (19:52)
* Mil Mascaras defeats Samson Kutsuwada (13:31)
* Giant Baba & Jumbo Tsuruta defeat Dick Slater & Ron Bass [2:1] (19:41)
- Slater beat Jumbo Tsuruta (11:18)
- Giant Baba beat Bass (15:41)
- Jumbo Tsuruta beat Slater (19:41)

That seems to fit.

So the match is likely 03/02/77.

The Mil Mascaras & Dick Slater & vs Jumbo Tsuruta & defeat Akihisa Takachiho looks like it might be this:

You have a hell of a lot of Jumbo stuff. At some point, we need to get that stuff as well to sift through for a Jumbo set. You have some stuff that probably no one else here has.

Steve & Kevin & Dan,

This is my attempt to list all the Destroyer matches that are out there, and identify all the sources of the matches.

Notes:

- Source? = need Steve to identify where it's from

- Lynch All Japan Classics = from Original Classics that I can't find on my copy of Dan's list

I've tried to be clear on how Jeff has them listed on the last version of his list that I have.

02/20/58 Dick Beyer vs Bob Brown from Buffalo
- Source?

06/19/58 Dick Beyer & Bob Brown vs Doc & Mike Gallagher
- Source?

05/10/63 Clip of The Destroyer vs Fred Blassie (very short clip from Glen Bray’s home movies)
- Source?

05/17/63 Clip of The Destroyer in ring before the Rikidozan/Kowalski match
- Source?

06/14/63 Clip of The Destroyer vs Fred Blassie
- Source?

12/02/63 Int'l Title: Destroyer vs Rikidozan (17:40, 3:26, 7:33)
- (DG #684 - G+ Puroresu Classics)
- (DG #822 - Rikidozan Classic Matches)
- (DG #1790 - PunQ JWA)

On this one, I seem to recall that the more recent releases of the match, the first fall is edited. PunQ's old JWA set was, I believe, sourced from Lynch material.

Looking at Lynch's list, there is a Bootleg #125 that is 4 hours of two AJPW specials from December 1992. The second is a trio of Funk tag league famous matches, with Destroyer-Rikidozan coming after them. I'm thinking that might be the complete version.

Anyway, my thought would be to check the time of of the falls on the G+ version as it's likely the best VQ. If any are edited, then perhaps substitute a complete version of the fall from one of the other sources. My recollection is that Dick did some of his best work in the match in the first fall... it would suck to have it edited out.

07/22/64 Clip of The Destroyer vs The Brusier

Same thing with this: want to make sure you get the fullest version of the draw available.

First two falls are in unusable shape. Third fall is in better vq. Since it is a title change, we should include the 3rd fall (or whenever the VQ shift to being usable).

This would be a gold mine if one of the newer sources (like the Funk fan poster on Youtube) somehow had it.

I put in as many match times as I could find at cagematch.net, puroresu.com and my spreadsheet. If I indicated complete, it's because Dan's times matched up extremely close with the official times. I used the "official" times, though Dan and I have found them to be off at times in the past. :)
